El año es 1905. La electricidad acaba de llegar. El Gran Hotel es el primer hotel en toda España que tiene luz eléctrica.


El hotel se encuentra1en un pequeño pueblo2, Cantaloa, en el norte de España.Debido a3 su proximidad a la costa, muchas de las familias ricas de España se quedan durante los calurosos4 veranos. En España, las familias toman vacaciones prolongadas en agosto. El Gran Hotel está lleno de huéspedes a toda su capacidad.

Es en este momento que el hotel debe1contratar rápidamente nuevo personal. Julio Olmedo viaja2 en tren durante todo un día para llegar al Gran Hotel. Julio es un hombre pobre y joven que ha trabajado3 mucho para poder sobrevivir con su familia. Llega 4 al Gran Hotel en busca de5 su hermana , Cristina, una antigua empleada del hotel. Parece que Cristina ha sido6 despedida desde hace7 un mes. Pero, ¿Adónde se ha ido8 ? Nadie sabe9 . Julio debe averiguarlo.

debe1= must (usually followed by the infinitive); viaja2= he travels; ha trabajado3 (this is the 3rd person of haber followed by the past participle,trabajado, worked; this tense is very popular in Spain and is often used instead of the preterite to indicate the past); para7 = in order to, usually followed by a noun, or a verb in infinitive; Llega4 = he arrives; en busca de5= in search of; hermana6 = sister; ha sido6 (3rd person of haber , a helping verb, to have, followed by the past participle of ser , sido; desde hace7 = since; se ha ido 8 = has left, irse, when used reflexively it means to leave; nadie sabe9 = no one knows (saber should not be confused with conocer = to meet or know a person).
