Sira es una chica de Madrid, España. Es hija de Dolores, una modesta costurera. Dolores es una madre soltera. Sira nunca ha conocido1 a su padre. Desde que2 es una niña, Sira trabaja mucho para ayudar a su madre económicamente. Trabaja con su madre cosiendo en el taller en lugar de jugar3 con otros niños, o de ir a la escuela.

Cuando la guerra civil española empieza4 (1936-1939), Sira huye de España con el hombre de quien está enamorada. Ella va a Tetuán, en Marruecos (África), donde va a tener un papel5 muy importante en un peligroso negocio de compra de armas6.
Empieza4 = begins (empezar is a stem-changing verb. This is a sample of an e→ie stem-changing verb: Querer changes to ie in all but nosotros and vosotros: quiero,quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren); donde va a tener un papel5 = where she will have a rol. Ir + a + infinitive = going to do (this indicates the future); de compra de armas6= arms, guns for sale.
